Kerala is popularly known as “Gods own country”. It is a small stretch of land with an axial length of 540 kms lying in between the Western ghats towering 500-2700m on the east  and the Arabian sea on the western side, in the south western tip of India. The land of panaromic beauty with 44 rivers, backwaters and beaches has a unique culture, traditions, folkarts, rites and rituals. Many of these are associated with agriculture.

The State is divided into three regions - the coastal lowlands, the fertile midlands and the highlands. The lowlands of Kerala are networked by endless backwaters and the deltas of forty-one rivers. The midlands are rich with cashew, coconut, arecanut, tapioca, banana, rice, ginger, pepper, sugarcane and vegetable plantations. The forested high land abounds in tea, coffee, rubber and spice plantations and wildlife reserves.
